Our breath is a powerful tool if we know how to use it. Throughout the day most of us barely pay attention to our breath with the majority of people not using the full capacity of their lungs. Our vagus nerve, playing a major role in our parasympathetic nervous system (our rest and digest system), lies through our main breathing muscle, the diaphragm and is stimulated by its movement. Bringing awareness to our breath and practising full breaths has been proven to reduce stress, increase alertness, boost our immune system, aid with digestive problems, stabilize blood pressure amongst other things.

In this course we’ll breathe our way through December, exploring how we can use different kinds of yogic breaths for the purpose of calming our nervous system, increasing our energy level and clearing our mind. We’ll learn different breathing techniques and practises such as Ujjayi (ocean breath), Kapalbhati (fire breath), Bhastrika (wind breath), Bhramari (bee breath) and Nadi Shodhana, and experience their different effects on our body and mind.

Each class will include yoga poses and a bit of moving to get the blood flowing, breathing exercises and theory as well as time for meditation or relaxation.
